About the artist

KOIRI

KOIRI is the alias of Afro-Dutch live artist, producer & art student Rachwill Breidel, who focused intensively on uniting the connection between his native country The Netherlands and roots from Suriname. Initially it started as an art project for his studies where he could implement certain developed skills as a music producer and to put the stigma around African music/animistic rituals into perspective. Furthermore Rachwill's father, being a professional drummer and familiar with the complexities of Afro-Surinamese rhythms contributed as an inspiration to delve into how, where and when this began. The concept and story of KOIRI is a traveler from an unknown time period and place who creates rhythms that are of Afro-Surinamese origin. His intentions are to deliver an altered state to the audiences, where the body has to move if it is possessed by the rhythmical structures that can be experienced”. Inspired by the cultural practices of the Maroons living in the jungles of Suriname combined with progressive obscure electronica, KOIRI contributes to the creation of futuristic Afrodiapsoric music. KOIRI's recurring event OGRI METI focusing on experimental electronica, live artists and subtle elements of Afro-animism is the platform he physically carries out. To give KOIRI's music more foundation, which has previously attracted interest from Traumgarten, Nyege Nyege, The School & Pinkman, Oroko Radio is the latest strand to proclaim international presence for BIPOC communities.
