With Guest: Dan Lee, founder of the fast-growing Joburg-based queer party Night Sweats, is a public historian, archivist and DJ interested in queer activism through hedonist aspirations. Their work charts and maps the history of queer nightlife in Johannesburg under apartheid, seeking to understand the ways in which spaces can be carved out for queer people through nightlife scenes and dance culture.
As a DJ, they move between 90s house pumpers, breakbeat, rave and gqom, and hold a monthly residency on Joburg’s Lilies Radio. Having played at iconic Queer parties such as Love2Love and Cape Town’s Pink Party, Dan is fast establishing themselves as a mainstay in the queer underground, and is continuing to do so through their own club night, as well as a number of upcoming projects that seek to further advance discussions about the state of the queer scene.
