The first episode of Chaos Theory delves into some of the music from artists on the African continent who are challenging cultural norms by fusing their native genres with modern electronic sounds. You’ll hear Senegalese Sabar and Mbalax from Dakar based Guiss Guiss Bou Bess, South African Kwaito and Gqom from Montparnasse Music, and Congotronics from Konono No1 band, who create their unique percussive sounds from items found in Kinshasa’s junkyards. I was inspired to make this mix when I djed at a film screening for Brixton Community Cinema and Air Afrique back in January, where they showcased beautifully moving works by Senegalese film directors as part of London Short Film Festival. In this exploration of Pan-African music, I chose songs that I feel blur the lines between electronic and acoustic, traditional and modern, African and European. Playing around with these sorts of dichotomies is an important part of my goal with Chaos Theory, to investigate fragmented identities through sound, and hopefully highlight some of the beauty hidden within these fragments. As the show unfolds over the coming months, I’ll be taking you down a sonic rabbit hole, bringing you a series of mixes, conversations and sound collages, all while embracing the juxtaposition of opposing ideas.
