Irukka is a show about exploring music and sound through the lens of movement and migration with the aim of centering blackness and black history in our collective understanding and appreciation of music. Irukka means the future is better and in line with this each episode aims to inspire, celebrate and encourage marginalised people to make art as a form of creating borderless futures.
This episode looks at sound warfare and sound resistance. Artist DJ Gurey shares his soundscapes and his work as a sound artist exploring what happens when black people make sound. We explore Djing as sound resistance, we challenge the notions of 'natural sound' and explore how sound reflects socio-economic background. It ends with a mix that incorporates Dj Gurey/Samantar soundscape black noise.
All the soundscapes can be heard on Mixcloud
