Dancing with DY

With DORMANTYOUTH

Back at it again this week, you're Dancing with DY! In this episode, I've packed some earworm Gqom gems directly from my current obsession, The Original ScHoMaNe WhatsApp-group. I am also joined by TEEPEEMASSOXS, one of Joburg's rising DJs especially in the big room club scene. In this mix, the DJ hailing from Johannesburg South schools us on Kwaito, the soundtrack of the big city in the New South Africa from the late '90s & early '00s.

Special Guest: TEEPEEMASSOXS is one of Johannesburg North's staple DJs, even though he's from the South. He started DJing in 2015 & also has a background in music production. He didn't really say much about a favourite dance move, but this Kwaito guest mix is sure to get YOU moving.

Thelma Ndebele is a non-binary (they/them) candidate architect whose interest lies in music as an alternative translation of place, as well as an archive of lived space. Their research and observations made during their post-graduate studies have culminated in them regarding music as a metric of place, specifically in clubs and event venues that host (sub)cultures that can be identified by the music produced and consumed by said social groups. When DJing, DORMANTYOUTH gravitates towards electronically-produced bass music, especially sounds that boom from underground scenes in rarely observed (musically) parts of the world. Their alias as DORMANTYOUTH along with their day job as an architect allows them to shape interactions between body and space, providing an eye-opening lens on how greatly sound can affect space and interpersonal interaction.
