Mandy Alexander aka Hypoestes is a DJ, online radio host and writer hailing from the Mother City, Cape Town, SA. Hypoestes is an all-encompassing music devotee with a journey that began on the dancefloor. Through her curiosity for the energy emitted through underground dance music, she began to research and unpack the roots of house and techno music. By regularly attending house and techno events, she became a necessary voice in initiating critical conversations surrounding the marginalisation and inequalities within Cape Town’s electronic dance music scene. She has published work on Dweller, Beatportal and Resident Advisor. Hypoestes currently hosts a monthly radio show called “An Open Letter To” on the Cape Town-based online radio station Hamshack Radio. She also held a three-month residency called “Liner Notes” on the Bristol-based 1020 Radio which showcased South African electronic dance music.
Through her monthly radio shows, Hypoestes has established herself as an up-and-coming DJ and necessary element to the evolving electronic dance music landscape in South Africa. Her vast knowledge of the various music soundscapes has afforded her the opportunity to showcase her love and appreciation for music through thoughtfully curated DJ sets. Hypoestes aims to look at music as a function for healing and movement. This can be felt in her writing and heard in her DJ sets. Her sonic landscape consists of a wide array of genres, including deep house, soul, techno, disco, and gqom. Hypoestes is intentional with her music whether it’s a vocal or instrumental that leads the sonic experience, she hopes to carry the message of love and liberation of the mind to everyone tuned in.
