Khubalo Le Nyanga invite DJ Afifa

With loving parents

The concept for this documentary came after my conversations with Naledi about her explorations of Hate. Hate is not something I give much thought to and Naledi's invitation to participate in the conversation was a challenge.

I see Hate as a negative emotion, a type of frequency or vibration, one I have to stay very far away from.

To create the documentary, I started by asking a few other people what they thought about hate. Based on what they shared and what i discussed with Naledi, I decided that the best way to present my ideas was to show the sound of my life in Bakau.

I left Jamaica in May 2024 to Africa in search of the truth about my ancestors. I have been living in the Gambia, a majority Muslim country in West Africa for one year. Here I am confronted with Religion.

The place where I returned to seek freedom was threatening to fill me with Hate. Religion has created a new "Africa"; a people who do not see themselves outside of Religion. I am confronted with the immense effect of Religion in Africa, the result of the destruction of many ancient cultures and civilisations.

I live in Bakau, at the mouth of the River Gambia where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. Bakau has a very peaceful vibration. It balances the vibration from the intensity of religion yet everywhere you can feel Religion.

"Frequencies and Vibrations" follows a typical day in my life in Bakau. I spend my time between a spot by the beach in an area called Cape Point, the Bakau Fish market and home, in the kitchen. I collected sounds from these places at different times over the course of months.

The documentary is a listening challenge. Can you feel the frequencies and vibrations? Hate is a low frequency vibration. Can you imagine the energy it takes for me to process the vibration from religion? What frequencies are required to live with this contradiction?

Thanks to Naledi for creating the space and opportunity for me to process this experience.

With Guest: I am Dj Afifa. I was born in St. Catherine Jamaica in 1981. I am inspired by music to discover, explore and create. I believe art is life and music is life.

I was formally educated at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica and graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in Sustainable Development, a Masters of Science in Public Policy and a Bachelor of Science Degree in International Relations.

Music has always been an important part of my life. As a child I enjoyed playing with my father’s old record player and listening to my mother sing.

I discovered art through constant creative experiments with music as a dj in Kingston, Jamaica. I have pursued art because it gives me life and freedom. I have been an artist for more than 15 years, creating two spaces “inspired by music; Di Institute for Social leadership and the SO((U))L HQ in Jamaica.

I returned to Africa in search of my ancestors in 2024, building a third space; the Sound Culture University in Bakau, the Gambia.

I produce work under; the Sounds of life , Art Radio, Art Tv, Sound Culture University and Things with Soul.

I have created sound projects in Haiti, Ghana and Senegal.
