Chiang Mai, November year 2565 ; A sonic journey through Loy Krathong celebration. During my 4 weeks studies on traditional Thai Massage and Medicine, I had the chance to witness the beautiful Loy Krathong* festival in the city of Chiang Mai. I have compiled a selection Lanna music (traditional North-Est Thai music) and some field recordings of my evening in the city. During the making of this show, I also found an incredible album by Cybe, released on STROOM in June 2017.
*Loy Krathong ; the name could be translated as "to float ritual vessel or lamp," and comes from the tradition of making krathong or buoyant, decorated baskets, which are then floated on a river. Many Thais use the krathong to thank the Goddess of Water and River, Goddess Khongkha. This festival traces its origin back to India.
- The festival takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar, thus the exact date of the festival changes every year.
