Homeplace: Sounds of Resistance

With Space Black

Space Black's Heba sits with up and coming British Sudanese DJ Saroor, on her chosen Homeplace - London. Through their shared love for Techno and it's seamless fusion with the drum beats of Sudanese supplications, the pair delve into how Saroor's move to the city from the welsh countryside gave her a new found voice that she was denied. The outcome is a sound that's gruelling, industrial, fast paced and mechanical like the spaces Saroor occupied, but HERS and filled with hope.

"I chose London as a space that brings me power as it was my first home away from home when I relocated here for university. As a country girl who spent most of my life in a small city in South Wales, adjusting and navigating my way through the city became one of my most freeing experiences and truly pivotal moment in my life. I chose to reflect on London’s vast infrastructure and bustling streets by incorporating experimental and industrial electronic sounds with pumping techno kicks. A somewhat moody mix with highs and lows, but the perfect soundtrack to my journey around London for the past 8 years."

Guest: Saroor is a Sudanese British born DJ with a huge passion for bass, breaks, hard drum and percussive electronic music. Saroor creates a hypnotic atmosphere by incorporating nostalgic sounds from the SWANA region with more western electronic music styles, a tribute to the diasporic experience.
